What's the definition of F[x] and F[[x]], where F is a field?

I know this might be a stupid question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

  • the ring of polynomials in $X$ with coefficients in $F$; 2) the ring of formal power series with coefficients in $F$, that is, all formal sums $a_0+a_1X+a_2X^2+\cdots$, with the natural addition and multiplication.
