Questions tagged [notation]

Questions on the meaning, history, and usage of mathematical symbols and notation. Please remember to mention where (book, paper, webpage, etc.) you encountered any mathematical notation you are asking about.

Before asking a question on the site, please check if you can find your answer in Earliest Uses of Various Mathematical Symbols or the book A History of Mathematical Notations.

Alternatively, a textbook or paper usually takes the time to explain the notation they're using; please remember to mention where you've seen the notation you are asking about.

Intersection of Elements from Sets of Sets

Say I have 2 sets of sets: $$ X = \left \{ \left \{ 1,2 \right \}, \left \{ 3,4 \right \} \right \} $$ $$ Y = \left \{ \left \{ 1,3 \right \}, \left \{ 2,4 \right \} \right \} $$ I want to express that each sub-set of x has at least 1 element in…

How to write notation for this function?

Say $X=(x_1,x_2,x_3,..,x_n)$, and there is a function of $X$, which is $f(X)=g(h(c,X))$ where $c$ is constant. Now in my case, given a $X_0$,there will be a function $i_1(x_1)$, which takes $x_1$ in $X_0$ as variable while other $x$ are fixed. I…

How to mathematically note down "sum of all elements / numbers of elements"

I have 1-n elements and I sum them up (I1+I2+I3...In)/N. Also for 5,5,8 the result is 6. I am not sure about the mathematical notation of the formula.

Meaning of $L^p$, $1\leq p < \infty$

What does "$L^p$, $1\leq p < \infty$" mean? For a finite $p\geq 1$ (e.g. $p=1$ or $p=3$)? Or for all finite $p\geq 1$? P.S. I understand what $L^p$ means, I just have problems understanding the part about the values of $p$.

If I say, $f|_{k}$, what does that mean?

If I say, $f|_{k}$, what does that mean? Sorry to be short on words but I can not find it anywhere on google so maybe someone could explain it and what we typically use it for. I ran into the notation in a book and they do not explain what it is.

How can I write the given statement using mathematical symbols

How do I write this in mathematical symbols: "Result is equal to the sum of product of $a(i)$ and $b(j)$ when $i,j$ are natural numbers and satisfy the property $i+j = k$"? I forgot to add one more constraint that : i and j are in the range [0,n] k…

Symbol for "covers" in posets

Has there been any suggestions for a symbol for "cover" relation on posets? (For example on the poset $(\mathbb{Z}, \mid)$ number 12 covers number 6, but does not cover number 3.) Texts I have seen just says "$a$ covers $b$" or explicitly states "$a…

Alternative notations for the function $f(a+b)$ to avoid confusion with $fa+fb$

What are some good alternatives to avoid mix-up with $f(x)$ where f is a function and $f(x)$ where f is a constant? I was thinking of some additional symbols to the f-symbol, $f_{x}(x)$, or maybe using different brackets $f[x]$, but I'm mostly…

How to denote that an equation is true?

If I have a simple equation such as this: $$x+5-1=x+4$$ how can I denote that this equation is true? More specifically, if I refer to that equation as P(x), then is there a mathematical notation for saying "P(2) is true"?

Ever thought of differentiate brackets for function and for order of operations?

Now parentheses "()" is used for both function, e.g. $f(x)$, and for order of operations, e.g. $(3+5)*2$. Ever in math history be suggested to differentiate? for example square bracket "[]" can be dedicated to order of operation, and "()" only for…
